Why A One Stop Shop For Multiple Formats Is More Accessible

At IC Works, we are seeing the start of a dramatic shift in how organisations approach their commitments to inclusive communication.

We’re increasingly working with clients who want to reach a wider, more diverse audience by moving away from a ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach to making information accessible and turning toward a multi-format strategy.

‍This change happens because leading organisations recognise that their audience isn't just one group - it’s a community of people with a broad range of different, specific communication needs.

Matching the Format to What An Individual Really Needs

‍When you provide information in multiple formats, you aren't just being ‘nice’ - you are providing a lifeline for independence.

Different people need different tools to stay informed‍ ‍

  • People with a learning disability and other cognitive issues need Easy Read to break down complex ideas into clear, visual steps

  • Deaf people who use British Sign Language need BSL videos to access information in their first language

  • Visually impaired people need audio versions that bring the written word to life.

‍Whether it is making research accessible for parents or creating an inclusive job pack to attract diverse talent, the goal is always the same: making sure no one is left out.

From the NHS to TfL: Meeting the Standard

‍We’ve been providing exactly this kind of ‘Easy Read/BSL/Audio’ package for Transport for London (TfL) for several years now, working alongside our partners at the Royal Association for Deaf People (RAD).

‍We are also seeing real growth in demand for In-Vision BSL signers, where the signer appears in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen.

‍We are currently working with NHS England and the Greater Manchester Mental Health Trust on video plus accessible formats projects because they have a wide audience of staff, carers, patients, and community groups.

Crucially, this work helps them comply with the NHS Accessible Information Standard, a legal requirement we are experts at helping our clients meet.

We’re Creators – We’re not Brokers

‍There is one thing we really want to emphasise: IC-Works and RAD don't outsource

‍When you’re working with us, you aren't dealing with a ‘middleman’ who just passes your job to a third party.

We’re a genuine one-stop shop

  • Co-produced by real humans: We directly employ experts by experience to co-produce our Easy Read, ensuring it actually makes sense to the people it is for

  • Expertly Crafted BSL: RAD works closely together with us: a combination of experienced freelancers and in-house staff are all seamlessly coordinated to ensure that our BSL quality is second to none

  • Direct Accountability: Because we do the work ourselves, we can guarantee the quality and integrity behind every format.

‍If your organisation needs to reach its entire audience at once, you really don't need to settle for a patchwork approach.
