Celebrating Human Rights Day on December 10 2025

IC Works Expert by experience, Rupa, reminded us that it is Human Rights Day today (10 December) and she produced a presentation about human rights for children, a concept embedded in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

The theme of Human Rights Day is ‘Human Rights, Our Everyday Essentials’ and the UN believes that during this difficult period we are living through it is important to “reaffirm the values of human rights and show that they remain a winning proposition for humanity. Human rights shape our daily lives, often in ways we may not always notice. Too often taken for granted or seen as abstract ideas, human rights are the essentials we rely on every day.”

Watch the trailer about the Human Rights Film Tour which explores the themes of this year’s Human Rights Day.

Human Rights Day marks the anniversary of one of the world's most groundbreaking global pledges: the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR).

The document enshrines the inalienable rights that everyone is entitled to as a human being - regardless of race, colour, religion, sex, language, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status.

The Declaration was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in Paris on 10 December 1948 and sets out, for the first time, fundamental human rights to be universally protected.

As an Easy Read provider, we second the UN’s sentiments about ‘Everyday Essentials’ and would argue that having information that is easy to understand is a human right and one of those essential things that shape our daily lives.

If you do not have good quality information about the daily things you do, it can make it difficult to:

  • find and live in good-quality housing

  • gain access to good quality services, especially health and care services

  • understand your rights and feel confident to express yourself

  • get the benefits you are entitled to

  • use public transport

  • get meaningful employment… and many other things.

In 2025 we were fortunate to work with the UN on some Easy Read reports and believe we were one of the first Easy Read providers to co-produce these reports, working closely with UN staff, notably Omar (who definitely caught the Easy Read bug!), on this year’s Indigenous Peoples Report.

So we hope that in our own small way, IC Works has contributed to those Everyday Essentials.
