An easy-to-read action plan for TfL

The Brief

Transcribe TfL’s Bus Action Plan, which explains how TfL is going to create ‘a bus service that Londoners want to use and does not pollute’ and work towards Net Zero targets as part of TfL’s drive to reduce pollution in the capital.

The Easy Read Document

The final document was provided as a designed interactive pdf document that included:

• professional photos taken by TfL for the document

• TfL stock photos and some PhotoSymbols.

London Underground's 'Fit for the Future'

The Brief

Transcribe a 9,000-word document describing London Underground’s proposed developments over the next 10-20 years, including the Crossrail project to a tight timescale.

Our in-house focus group (family carer, Jayne and adult with learning disabilities, Nikki) assisted with production of the document.

The Document

The final Easy Read document was provided as MS Word and pdf files that included:

• Photos taken by TfL for the original document
• TfL stock photo library photos
• PhotoSymbols4.

A Service User Guide fit for users and inspectors

The Brief

Produce an Easy Read version of Oakhaven Care Home’s Service User Guide prior to a Care Quality Commission inspection.

The Document

Provided as a Word document and pdf incorporating PhotoSymbols4, photos of Oakhaven service users, stock photos, and some unique photos taken by IC Works.

Centro Application Form for Disabled Persons Concessionary Travel Pass

The Brief

Produce an Easy Read version of the Disabled Persons Concessionary Travel Pass application form for transport provider, Centro.

The Document

Provided as a print ready pdf for professional printing and as a fillable pdf to enable Centro’s disabled passengers to complete the form online.

A tricky topic simplified

The Brief

Islington Council wanted their 'Paying for care at home or in the community' leaflet transcribed into an Easy Read document using PhotoSymbols4.

The Document

Working with our in-house focus group, we transcribed the original 6,000-word document and provided print-ready and web-optimised versions.

Thanks to Jayne & Nikki's input we changed the order of some information, stripped out some complex financial information and smoothed out the consistency of terms.

A 'fillable' complaints form, no printer required

The Brief

Islington Council asked us to produce a straight forward easy-to-read document for their dedicated social services complaints service.

The Document

Using PhotoSymbols4 we produced a brand new document partly based on their corporate complaints form. 

This was provided as a print-ready document, a web-optimised pdf and as a fillable pdf. The latter enables complainants to complete the form online, save and email without the need for printing out a hard copy.

Printing documents at home can be a tricky task, rendered even trickier with the popularity of tablets and smartphones, as neither device easily links to a printer. .

Easy Read audio

We also produced a spoken word audio version of Islington's council-wide complaints leaflet, to enhance the accessibility and audience of the document. 

As Easy Read documents are shorter than the original, this results in a pithier audio that doesn't take so long to listen to. And although there's a lot of accessible software (for visually impaired and blind people) that reads text on websites and documents out loud, the human voice is much more listenable! Here's a 30-second clip::

The Brief

Produce an Easy Read version of the Service User Agreement that care provider - Freedom Support - has with each of their learning disabled service users.

The Document

A straight forward and to-the-point Easy Read document that condensed the original wordier Agreement into a succinct 13 pages.
